About the Workshop
Qiang's approach to still life painting focuses on creating dramatic setups by observing light distribution, and using bold, loose strokes to create powerful and accurate representations on canvas. Through demonstrations and individual assistance, Qiang will explain his process of manipulating values, colors, edges, and brushwork. Personal attention is given to each student according to their current skill level and goals. Objects, lights, and boxes are available to use, but feel free to bring your own. Qiang will also share his color research and introduce computer tools he's developed to help artists see color more accurately.
$150 non-refundable deposit.
Material List
Qiang Huang’s Supply List for still life painting
Welcome to my painting workshop. The following is a list of items you will need:
Brushes
You don’t have to use exactly the same brushes I use. Similar types and sizes will do. I use two kinds of brushes: bristle and synthetic.
Bristle Brushes:
#10 flat, # 8 flat, #6 flat, #3 flat. Any brand is fine.
Synthetic Brushes:
3/4” flat, #6 flat, #4 flat, #3 flat, 10/0 round. Any brand is fine. I really like the Qualita by Creative Mark.
Palette knife:
No special requirement
Paints
I use following colors to form a limited palette.
Titanium White, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Phthalo Green, Ultramarine Blue, Quinacridone Magenta, and Transparent Oxide Red.
If you think Phthalo Green and Quinacridone Magenta are too difficult to control, you may use Viridian and Permanent Alizarin instead.
Medium:
I paint mostly without using medium, but I still keep a small amount Gamsol and Gamblin Solvent-Free Gel.
Palette
No specific requirement. I use a piece of glass over a piece of brown paper. If you like a one-time-use paper palette, use the gray color one, not white.
Canvas/Panels
No special requirement. Both panels or stretched canvases can work. I usually coat one more layer of Gesso before the workshop. You don’t need to tone the surface with any color or gray.
Paper Towel
Any kinds can work. I personally like Bounty.
Still Life Objects and Drapery
The workshop will provide some objects, but you may choose to bring your own objects. It will be helpful if you bring solid color draperies for your setup background. White, black, gray, and dull colored ones are best.
Recommended Colors
Titanium White, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Phthalo Green, Ultramarine Blue, Quinacridone Magenta, and Transparent Oxide Red. If you think Phthalo Green and Quinacridone Magenta are too difficult to control, you may use Viridian and Permanent Alizarin instead.
