Clyde Aspevig’s heart became inextricably bound to the scenic majesty of Northern Montana that surrounded him as a boy. Raised in an isolated, rural community, he spent a lot of time outside where his entire development was etched around the vast landscape.  He felt a great sense of freedom as he traversed the sparsely populated area, running through coulees, observing the land, and watching the extraordinary plants and animals that dominated it.

Aspevig still lives in Montana, not far from where he grew up.  His cultural and personal experiences unite to create work of the highest caliber.  When he goes on location to paint, he encounters nature firsthand, hikes through the land, and feels the topography.  This helps him determine the idea he wants to communicate… something he considers one of the most important components of a painting.  Aspevig is a master at strategically selecting which elements to incorporate and manipulate in his paintings that will produce a compelling viewing experience. He possesses a seemingly miraculous ability to do just that while conveying a unique, three-dimensional quality in his work.

Unlike portrait work where you are confined to show likeness, Aspevig prefers to paint landscape because it allows a broader perspective for interpretation.  He believes it touches our emotions through the cumulative experiences in our lives and, psychologically, is one of the most powerful genres in which one can work.  There is an undeniable passion that exists between the artist and the landscape of Montana.  Though landscape is his muse, his vision comes from an internal connection that transcends what is seen by the eye.  “I see nature as being so much more powerful than we realize.” Inspired by less-obvious scenes, he strives to preserve their unique beauty and cadence through his paintings.

Clyde Aspevig has over twenty permanent exhibitions of his work across the country.  His paintings are a treasured possession for collectors and are displayed in museums, corporate, and personal collections in every state in the United States, Mexico, Canada, several European countries, and Japan.  In addition to his numerous awards, Aspevig has been featured in publications for over three decades.
