The central figure in this work is the wonderful DezaRae Simmons, who I photographed thanks to her grandmother Nancy Mendz a couple of years ago in Shawnee Oklahoma while Susan was teaching a workshop at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Their whole family are such inspiring people. A short time after I photographed her, DezaRae was chosen to travel to Japan as a tribal ambassador for Oklahoma and her native tribe.
