This studio piece is based on a plein air sketch I did in Eastpoint, Florida, on the Forgotten Coast. I painted the sketch while listening to a bit of Jimi Hendrix and—don’t tell anyone—sipping some ice-cold vodka. The man you see here, along with his wife, pulled in on their oyster boat from stage right. They were playing Allman Brothers music on the boat, coming back from a long day of oystering. To my left, across the highway off-scene, was a couple who ran an “antique” store. They were yelling at each other quite loudly, and I suspect they had a good “load on.” The oyster man came over to look at my sketch and mentioned that he owned those boats. We had a nice, brief chat. It was a wonderful day to paint in such a cool location. Unfortunately, that oyster shack is gone now, destroyed by a hurricane—just like so many old things on the Forgotten Coast.
