For over 13 years, Janice Hindes has conducted an annual One Day I’ll Paint event for under served middle school students in San Antonio neighborhoods. Students receive a one-on-one teacher, meals, supplies, frames, printed invitations, and a sponsored exhibition of their art followed by a reception, all free of charge. Here, her middle schoolers create their very first oil painting and the results speak for themselves. Janice’s adult art students and/or past “One Day I’ll Paint” participants serve as one-on-one
instructors, guiding the new students through the painting process by simply asking questions… “Is what you painted the same or different from what you see?” “Is it too high too low, too big too small, too light too dark, need more yellow, red or blue.”
Students know the answer 95% of the time, but just don’t know how to analyze and form the questions. By letting the students see inside the artist teacher’s head, they are able to create unbelievable painting results. The only requirement for participation is students are asked to teach/share their lesson to another art student, at his/her school, or a friend. Unbeknownst to the participant the stipulation to teach another student/friend reinforces the student’s original lesson. Learning becomes fun for all.
