CLASS INTRODUCTION
Explore the essential techniques for painting from direct observation and photography with award winning painter Patrick Saunders. Learn to paint any subject, from the most simple to complex with one approach. Patrick will demonstrate the process of simplifying the subject and moving to finish as rapidly as possible in order to add more energy and excitement to your painting. Students will learn about composition, value, texture, color temperature and accuracy in paint application. While Patrick will be demonstrating in oil paint, students are welcome to use acrylic and pastels, as the approach and concepts will be interchangeable.
More Detail
The goal of the class is to show that with one approach, you can paint any subject in any situation. The subjects that you choose are completely up to you, but I recommend choosing subjects that interest you. Paint what you love!
Day 1, we will start at 9am with a short materials review followed by a demonstration (painting from photography). After a lunch break, it’s your turn to paint. You are welcome to bring photos of your favorite subject to work from, or even a still life. The studio also has items you can use. I cannot stress enough that it is extremely difficult to paint from your iPhone – way too small! Printed photos are best, and if you can print as large as you are going to paint, even better! I will often print my photo the same size and proportions as my canvas. That’s not always possible, but it can be very helpful. If you have any questions regarding photos, or would like my opinion on a photo, please feel free to email me. We will hold a group critique from 3:30 to 4pm, with the day ending at 4.
Day 2, we will begin with another demonstration. This time I will work from a still life and direct observation. Following my demonstration, it will once again be your turn, so please bring your subject. Once again, it is your choice whether you paint from a photo or from life. The studio also has items you can use. We will once again hold a group critique from 3:30 to 4pm, with the day ending at 4.
Day 3, will again begin with a demonstration. This one will be a portrait, most likely a pet from a photograph. Following the demo, it will once again be your turn to paint, followed by a final critique from 3 to 4pm, with the day ending at 4.
I have attached my suggested materials list. I will be demonstrating in oil paint, but you are also welcome the use acrylic paints or pastels or any opaque medium, as the concepts are all similar. I stress “suggested” on this list. You are welcome to use whatever materials you prefer (alternate colors, brushes etc.), but I wanted to give you an idea of my personal preferences.
I often get asked what the ideal size is for your canvas, and I have to admit I am very flexible on that front. It is really about what you are most comfortable with. I will be demonstrating anywhere from a 9×12 to 14×18 depending upon the subject. Keep in mind that painting smaller is not necessarily an easier thing to do!
Keep in mind, this is your class. If you choose to work from photos each day or a still life each day, you are welcome to do so. You are not at all required to paint the same or similar subjects to my demos. Paint what interests you personally. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
