In this course, students will be introduced to a fundamental approach that uses both gesture and structure to efficiently draw portraits from life. This approach relies on what is seen visually but also understand how light falls on a subject. The anatomy of each feature are introduced to develop a structurally informed and accurate portrait.

Students will practice comparative measuring first, then draw the live model throughout many sessions in order exercise observation while gradually learning about anatomy and rendering. The goal of this course is to enhance technical dexterity, observational skills, and shading in a tactile manner in order to achieve realism/naturalism in their work.

Lourdes will give lectures, demos, and critiques throughout the course. Knowledge of anatomy or experience in drawing is recommended.
