“Coffee Break” by Kim Hinnant

In this painting, a cavalry soldier sits in camp at Fort Davis, Texas, surrounded by the unique Davis Mountains.  One can only imagine what he’s thinking about…a fellow soldier who was mortally wounded, the disrespect endured by his white counterparts, possibly a sweetheart left behind.  Meager wages, harsh conditions, and segregation comprised the life of the Buffalo Soldier.  Sources may disagree on how this nickname began, but one version is that it was given to them by Native Americans as a sign of respect.  Though often omitted from contemporary history books, these valiant warriors played an integral role defending our country during the second half of the nineteenth century.  They were established by Congress a year after the Civil War in 1866 as the first peacetime all-black regiment in the United States Army.

Born in Louisiana and raised in Texas, Kim Hinnant has been riding, training, and competing on horses all her life.  While studying Animal Science at Texas A&M University, she began doing day work on different ranches and fell hopelessly in love with the cowboy way of life.  Kim’s passion for the old west, the modern-day cowboy, and the horse is reflected in her award-winning, realistic style of painting.  “Western art is my passion.  I find myself drawn to a scene because of the way it makes me feel and it is always a challenge and a joy to be able to capture that on canvas and offer the viewer a glimpse into a way of life few ever experience
