“Lights at Dusk” by Dan Young

“Lights at Dusk” captures the unique colors found during the magical time that exists briefly before daylight disappears and darkness settles in for the night.  White snow is transformed into beautiful hues of blue-violet.  The temperature drops as the sun fades behind the mountains.  Animals are nestled in the barn.  And the glow from the farmhouse beckons to all, “Come inside, sit on the hearth by the fire, and share a warm drink and a good meal.”   Slowly, the chill from a long day’s work in the cold and sometimes cruel conditions of a Colorado winter melts away as fellowship is shared.

Dan Young masterfully depicts this rural scene found amongst the mountains of Colorado.  Born in Denver and raised in Western Colorado, Dan grew up camping and fishing throughout the Rocky Mountains.  After attending the Colorado Institute of Art, he moved to Dallas where he pursued the commercial art field.  Despite developing a successful career in illustration, Dan always felt the landscape of Colorado calling him home.  In 1989, he returned to Colorado and began painting full-time.  Young enjoys painting rural life of the west found in the ranches and farms throughout the mountain valleys and river bottoms.  He states, “Though I’m a landscape painter, I like introducing hints of man’s presence in the landscape.  Sometimes I feel I’m in a race to paint a disappearing way of life.  It’s hard to watch so many of the family farms and ranches being swallowed up by development.”
